The future of our planet and civilization are gravely threatened by the continued extraction of oil for fossil fuels. At this late stage in the fight against intensifying planetary heating, extracting more fossil fuels, especially from the dirty and toxic tar sands of Alberta, is clear science denial.

As people everywhere slowly begin to recognize this threat, we remain blocked from real, consequential change by our dependency on the legacy systems of carbon energy and long distance transportation.

This solstice, we urge Edmontonians to acknowledge that we continue to travel down a dark path of dependency and ecological destruction.

The willful carbonization of the atmosphere is a crime against the biosphere. Our lifestyle choices, although important, will only take us so far. There are still far too many private interests and political alliances in this province that keep us locked into the economics of oil extraction.

This installation serves a warning. These crimes against the biosphere will only go unpunished for so long. The black snake here depicts the strangling nature of this deadly dance. Big Oil is the head of a snake that needs to be severed.
